FM Approvals, an FM Global enterprise, has evaluated the first series of welding pads, blankets and curtains submitted under the newly developed Approval Standard 4950, Welding Pads, Welding Blankets and Welding Curtains for Hot Work Operations. Newly Approved products tested to this Standard are now available through Tempro Tec Inc.

Approval Standard 4950 is the first generally available standard for hot work operations and is the most comprehensive. Customer demands for guidance in developing uniform corporate policies for hot work management led to the development of this new Standard, and includes the specification of FM Approved protection products.

Hot work protection products are grouped into three categories under Approval Standard 4950; welding pads, welding blankets and welding curtains. These categories were chosen due to the differences in severity of the various types of hot work operations, making it impractical for a manufacturer to provide a single product for all anticipated uses and environments. Test samples are subjected to a series of tests, including fire/thermal resistance, charring embrittlement and accelerated weathering.
